Canada Visitor Visa

Canada Tourist visa also called a Canada Visitor Visa or Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is an official entry document that is pasted on your passport by the Canadian Visa officials. This document shows that you meet the requirements to enter Canada and grants you entry into Canada.

Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

An eTA or electronic travel document is electronically attached to your passport and allows you to enter Canada. It is valid for 5 years or until the validity of your passport, whichever comes first. With your eTA, you can stay in Canada for up to six months at a time.

Do I need to apply for VisitorVisa to visit Canada?

To travel to Canada, you need an entry document which could be a visitor visa, electronic travel authorisation (eTA), or in some cases only your passport. Thus, the type of entry document required will depend on:,

  • The type of travel document you will travel with
  • The country that issued your travel document
  • Your nationality
  • Your mode of travel to Canada for this trip
The first step before applying is to find out that whether you need a visitor visa or eTA or only a passport to visit Canada.
How long can I stay in Canada on Tourist Visa?

The Canadian consulate decides on case to case basis on the validity of your visa. Thus, it depends on your case and how well you can convince them of your strong ties with your home country and your intent to leave Canada after your visa expires.

In most cases, you can stay in Canada for six months on a tourist visa. Once you receive your visa, it will carry both a date of issue and entry. So, you can either be issued a Multiple Entry Visa or a Single Entry Visa

The officer at the port of entry may allow you to stay for more or less than six months. Consequently, they will stamp your passport with the date by which you need to leave Canada.  Additionally, the officer might also issue a document as a visitor record mentioning the date you need to leave Canada.

Multiple Entry or Single Entry

  • Multiple Entry Visa: In this case, a visa valid for up to 10 years or one month lesser than the validity of your passport, whichever is earlier, is issued. However, the maximum duration you can stay is only six (6) months per trip.

For example, You get a visitor visa from India to Canada in July 2022, and the validity of the visa is till July 2032. So, in this case, you can visit Canada multiple times till March 2025. However, the duration of each visit should be up to 6 months only.

  • Single Entry Visa: The single entry visa allows you to enter Canada only once. It is generally issued when the purpose of your visit is limited to only one specific event or official visit.

For parents or grandparents willing to visit their children or grandchildren in Canada, they have 3 options

  1. Apply for a Visitor visa, in which case they can stay for a maximum of 6 months
  2. Super Visa: In this case, the parents can stay for 5 years per trip
  3. Parent Grandparents Program: This is a program to sponsor them permanently as Permanent Residents
